Size does matter, when it comes to blogs

About DJC

The older I get, the less I know and the more inquisitive I get.

Unfortunately, despite a lifelong search, most of the answers elude me. That said, I love to ask the questions and fuel the debates that will ultimately lead us all to a better understanding of the big issues in life, the universe and everything.

They say that we spend 98% of our lives in our head. I for one would like to use that time as effectively as possible.

By D.John Carlson ... How important is blogging as a marketing tool, I hear you ask?

A 2016 survey found that 81% of businesses found blogging ‘useful’, ‘important’ or ‘very important’ as part of their marketing strategy. Some 67% of business to business marketers reported that blogging increased their leads. Blogging has been found to increase website links by as much as 97%.

A survey also found that effective blogging led to a 434% increase in indexed pages.

As with many other things – size does matter. In 2015 the average length of effective blogs was found to be 800 words. By 2016, one survey found the average length had increased to 900 words. Another survey put the average blog length in early 2016 at 1140 – 1285 words.

It is apparent that blogs are growing in length as people flesh out points made and substantiate observations. It appears that detail is becoming increasingly important.

At the same time, I would caution against blogs that are too long. I would argue that 1200 words is a good limit. Of course, quantity never takes the place of quality, and quality will always be the key to success. The keys to quality include, relevance, originality, presentation, and use of images.

TRUST ME

  • Blogging is a very effective marketing tool in B2B and B2C marketing.
  • Blog posts are getting longer. However, keeping the length to 1200 words is recommended.
  • Quality, and not quantity, is the key to success.
