OPINION: Just recently, I've been struggling to deal with the almost daily onslaught of mass carnage unfolding on the news - often live and uncensored.

These are times of cowardly, senseless acts of terror, of mass shootings in schools and nightclubs, beheadings, bombings, natural disasters and a torrent of daily horror and heartbreak.

So how do we cope with the psychological assault in this age of 24-hour news services? I don't know about you, but it scares me that I've started to become numb to it all.

Sometimes I feel I'm drowning in it, so I don't even click on the report, or I flip the channel (not generally considered good practise for someone working in the media).

As must others!

Sadly, this fear only fans the flames of ignorance on social media, with small, extremist sections of society then given a platform to spread their fearmongering.

Instead, why not become the change in the world you want to see.

Take a stand, make a difference, unite with other positive, fair-minded souls in the world.

Become a volunteer.
