Sharing my thoughts and opinions with you

The Melbourne Cup is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to corporations trying to fleece you of your cash. What are your thoughts?

As the nation celebrates the running of The Melbourne Cup, we've been bombarded by advertising from betting companies, much like we are every other day, but more so.

Every time I turn on my TV or radio these days, I hear some sort of betting/gambling advertisement, the regularity of which is somewhat dangerous in my opinion.

Do you think that all gambling advertising should be banned? Sound off in the comments below.

As we grow more susceptible to advertising, it's difficult to not question the morality of gambling promotion, especially with it having such a negative impact on so many lives.

Steps have been made to limit the amount of gambling advertising, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull confirming in May that the Government would ban gambling advertising before 8.30pm during live sporting events, and for five minutes before and after the start of play.

However, this ban does not apply to racing.

These measures are insufficient to stop what is such a damaging trend and culture in Australia.

On the biggest betting day of the year, we must question this potentially toxic advertising practice that can ultimately fuel addiction.

Studies by the Australian Gambling Research Centre indicate the following:

  • Sports betting has grown substantially - and is emerging as a significant contributor to problem gambling, especially among younger adult males.
  • There is considerable community opposition to the prolific promotion of gambling through sport, especially related to potential negative impacts for children, adolescents, young men and problem gamblers.
  • Research into the advertising of other harmful products suggests advertising increases uptake and consumption, especially in the adolescent starter market.
  • Research into sports betting advertising suggests it can shape gambling attitudes, intentions and behaviours, and impacts most negatively on existing problem gamblers and sports bettors.
  • This clearly demonstrates the dangers of betting advertising, and is something that needs to be monitored.
