Extremely important was the recognition of the achievements of Jackie Robinson, a pioneering African-American athlete who fought for acceptance in the then white-dominated sport of American baseball in the 1940s and '50s.

  • First canned beer, Kruger Cream Ale, is sold by American company Kruger Brewing on this day in 1935.
  • Music legend Neil Diamond was born in 1942.
  • Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, the PM of England during WWII, dies in 1965.
  • Alfred Hitchcock releases his first film as director - The Pleasure Garden - in England in 1927.
  • Movie The Grapes of Wrath is released in 1940.
  • Jackie Robinson signs highest player contract ($35,000) in Dodger baseball history (1950).
  • Jackie Robinson is  first African-American elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame.  Bob Feller is also elected that year, 1962.
  • Japanese Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi is found hiding in the Guam jungle in 1972, where he had been since the end of World War II. 
  • Apple Computer Inc unveils its revolutionary Macintosh personal computer (1984).
