Once you move beyond the big guns of the wine game, some absolute gems are hiding in plain sight.

There's an incredible 180 wineries packed into the Margaret River winemaking region alone -- with 3000 spread across Australia.

That’s obviously a lot, so it’s easy for the big names to dominate wine discussion.

Penfolds, Orlando and the like are giants of the industry, but there is a long tail of lesser-known wineries producing distinctive wines for smaller, but no-less appreciative, groups of consumers.

While enjoying a recent purchase on a sweltering balcony overlooking the Swan River in Perth, I compiled my list of five of the best lesser known wineries in Australia.
