History buffs and music fans have plenty to like about February 26. Here's a taste of some of the landmark events that occurred on this day:

Johnny Cash & Michael Jackson.

Johnny Cash & Michael Jackson

  • In 1606, Dutch explorer Willem Jansz becomes the first recorded European to set foot on Australian soil.
  • John Harvey Kellog, inventor of the corn flake, was born in 1852.
  • A single national US currency is established in 1863 by president Abraham Lincoln.
  • The brig Maria sinks off Queensland in 1872. Twenty-one crew drown, with another 14 killed by indigenous Australians. 
  • Gandhi supports the African People's Organisation's 1910 resolution to declare the Prince of Wales' day of arrival in South Africa a day of mourning, in protest against the South Africa Acts disenfranchisement of Indians, coloureds and Africans.
  • Mutual Film Corporation signs Charlie Chaplin to a film contract (1916).
  • In 1928, musician Fats Domino was born.
  • Country music legend Johnny Cash was born in 1932.
  • In 1970, The Beatles release Beatles Again, aka Hey Jude album.
  • Michael Jackson's Thriller album goes straight to the top of the 1983 music charts and stays there for 37 weeks.
