When it comes to historic events, March 9 has seen a bit of everything.

A mixed bag of historic events have taken place on March 9,  from strange laws to naming Australian settlements and more. Today in history had it all!

  • Kissing in public banned in Naples, Italy, making it an offence punishable by death (1562).
  • The settlement of Melbourne is named (1837).
  • South Australia holds its first elections, with a large number of informal votes cast (1857).
  • The first person in space, Yuri Gagarin, was born (1934).
  • Granny Smith, whom the apple was named after, died (1870).
  • US forces firebomb Tokyo, killing 100,000 towards the end of WWII, in the single most deadly bombing raid in history (1945).
  • Barbie makes her debut at the American Toy Fair in New York. Over a billion have been sold worldwide since. (1959)
  • Les Miserables opens at the Lyric Theatre, Brisbane (1991).
