Protein is so much more than meat

About Thomas

I write because I can type. I can type because I have a keyboard.

I am a new age Australian resident that is experiencing this new continent with a fresh set of eyes.

I write on a wide range of topics. Well, I write on food. There you have it, I write on a wide range of food as well.

One of the most common questions asked of vegetarians and vegans is, how do you get your protein?

The merits of vegetarianism and veganism are well known.

Not eating animals is good for the environment, ethically sound, potentially more affordable and much better in terms of digestion, weight management and reducing the risk of cancer.

One of the most common questions asked of vegetarians and vegans is, how do you get your protein?

Given the importance of protein in the human diet, this is clearly an important question. Protein, most commonly associated with the consumption of meat or meat products, is essential for humans to repair damaged tissue while creating enzymes, hormones and other bodily chemicals.

Protein is essential for building and maintaining bones, muscle, cartilage, skin and blood. On a more practical level, protein (along with iron) gives us the energy to get through a busy day.

But meat isn't the only source of protein -- it's not even the most efficient source for us.

Vegetarians can obtain protein from animal products like eggs and dairy, sources not available to vegans. Efficient sources of protein available to all human beings, vegetarians and vegans included, are many. They include:

  • Soy in its many forms, including tofu
  • Quorn, fantastic in a range of dishes
  • such a broad variety,
  • Hemp, not the hallucinogen
  • Sesame, sunflower and poppy seeds
  • Everyday vegetables high in protein include:

  • Green peas
  • Beans
  • Chickpeas
  • Lentils
  • Artichokes
  • Spinach
  • Broccoli
  • This list goes on and on.

The fact is, plants are an excellent source of protein. Cows, however, are known to consume eight times more protein than they can deliver when eaten.

For a great protein-rich diet, you don’t have to look anywhere else. Come visit YsEpicure’s extensive range of delicious vegetarian offerings today.
