As far as national anthems go, Advance Australia Fair fails to mean much to me. Here's why.

We have a beautiful country but is our national anthem accurate? (Image: Shutterstock).

"Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil, Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts, Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair!"

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross, We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours, Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas, We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine, To Advance Australia fair.

In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair!"

As far as national anthems go "Advance Australia Fair" isn't terrible, yet it fails to mean much to me unless I'm at a sporting event.

And why do we never sing the second verse? This is a travesty to me because I feel that the second verse of the anthem is just as, if not more, meaningful.

Just reading the lyrics of the second verse is very emotive and captivating.

"We'll toil with hearts and hands" suggest that Australians are blue collar, working-class people.

"For those who've come across the seas, we've boundless plains to share" would suggest that we are an accepting and welcoming nation (although I guess this is debatable).

In general, I find the second verse just as or more inspiring than the first, so why do we skip it?

Is it just a bad song?

Is it because the second verse is slightly more uncomfortable in the face of how we treat and welcome newcomers to our country (Manus Island, anyone)?
